are you trying to work out if you should get a pension?

Capitalism is destroying pensions before just about anything else at the moment.

then i advise you not to buy a pension, and instead spend your money on one of these:

Potentially indefinitely. Plans are already being hatched to build a huge parabolic mirror to place on the earth's axis. [Seriously!] This will divert enough light - it is believed - to prevent the point of no return (at current technological levels anyway) of global warming.

The major threat to humanity at the moment I think actually stemss from the coming world war and peak oil. This will probably result in some mass starvation and some really bloody civil conflicts and an upsurge in class struggle as well as a myriad proxy wars.

I don't think we'll be likely to see an open conflict between the three superpowers - if we do then it will be the most horrible ever to have happened and will in all likelihood lead to a terrifying nuclear apocalyptic catastrophe, dependent upon whether or not there's no absolutely militaristic superiority resting in one power - but instead envisage a cold war the beginings of which we have already seen with the invasion of Iraq, the bombing of Serbia, the unicol pipeline affair and Afghanistan, the massive US troop manoeveres following 9/11 and of 2004, the energy deals between Russia-China and the Franco-Germans, and Russia-China and Iran, Plan Pueblo Panama, the launch of the Euro, and the recent bickering over some islands in the sea off the coast of China and Japan where there's oil.

Nonetheless while all this is prompted by peak oil, and will undoubtedly be world shattering in consequence, there is actually fuckloads of coal and natural gas available so there is still plenty time to develop renewable energy if the right political choices are made, but we'll definitely have a catasrophic failure in the short term either way.

That said even at its most horrible I don't think that a nuclear winter, would mean either the end of the world or the end of humanity. We're not dinosaurs, we're sentient creatures who fashion our environment around ourselves to suit our needs. If we fuck it up 'we' can go back to the drawing board so to speak, much as in the worst case scenario we'll all die horribly either through evaporation or radiation sickness and the world will be left to be populated by the lovechildren of Rupert Murdoch, French technocrats, the odd few models some Chinese Stalinists elites and a few scientists - eugh!

In fact post apocalypse humanity would probably look a lot like these two:-

He's right, peak oil will get us before global warming does. My advice is get yourself an allotment, learn to be very good at growing food and learn to be very good at defending your allotment with a 12-guage.

And chickens are pretty unbeatable, leftovers go in, eggs come out!

The state and the capitalists will be swept away in an exlosion of revolutionary upheaval with birmingham as the epicentre!
