There used to be an excellent annual event in Southsea - the Smokey Bears Picnic, which brought hilarious responses from Hampshire Police.

Sadly I seem to have lost touch with the organisers, and I don't think it has been held for a couple of years .......... a real shame.

Hi, I'm a student at the University of Southampton and I'm intending to setup an anarchist/autonomous/libcom whatever group here asap. There are a few like-minded folk here that I know, as well a small DIY punk scene which embodies anarchist views, but they do little outside of the music scene. The problem to me is that there is no organisation to speak of (that I have found in 3 years here at least), which is probably why we appear invisible and hence why I'm trying to organise the society.

I'm currently talking to other student anarchist groups in the UK for advice on how to go about this, namely: Sussex autonomous students and Norwich anarchist students and any help or advice would be gratefully received. Likewise if anyone knows of other similar groups, especially student-based organisations that I could badger for advice I would be very grateful. I'll keep you informed of my progress either way.

Hey @ saint, cool nickname, i hope you've got the away shirt! Does John from anarchist graphics in pompey still exist, he might be worth a try if he's still about?

Hi all,

I just recently moved from Edinburgh to Bournemouth, just across the border, and am up for meeting folk. am happy to travel to Southampton from time to time. What kinds of things are folk interested in? Maybe start off with something gentle like a discussion group or pub nights?

(Just realised this thread is from 2003 -- well maybe time to restart it?)

A new group has started up in Bournemouth.

Alter-globalisation Bournemouth is a discussion group for people who want to question the status quo and who are looking to imagine alternatives (for global politics and for everyday life). Folk who've come along so far have been inspired by a variety of movements and ideas, from fair trade to Indymedia, anarchism to buddhism, and feminism to the Zapatistas. There is no 'party-line', only a request to listen respectfully to each other.

Have just moved on to the site so its going to take me a while to get accustomed, please excuse my spelling as i cant see where the spell check is.
Stumbled across this site after looking for information on Trade Guilds, and am interested in the essoteric side of life, as well as the exoteric.
I'm situated in Portsmouth Hampshire.
Have been studying the Occult subjects now for about 17 years seriously, and am about to start up a project to build an Ark (small model). Reason being is that i am trained as a Shipwight boatbuilder, and have come to the stage where i need to enhance the Trade with Spirituality, Truth and reason.
Am looking for any groups local to this area!

Hey, I've just moved back down to Hampshire (Eastleigh to be exact) and I've been part of some really interesting anarchist groups in Manchester in the past few years & am looking for some like-minded individuals around the Southampton area now. I just noticed how old some of these post are, so if anyone out there knows about anything let me know!!

thanks grin

If this isn't too late, I'd be up for getting some sort of group (discussion or whatnot) in the Southampton, as i go to Solent Uni. I think the Socialist party is the closest thing i've come across, but its no good..
So perhaps we could get something going in the area, and adopt a voice.

There are a bunch of anarchists in Northampton and Amherst and an Anarchist cultural center in Easthampton. It's only a couple hours from Boston. Never heard of Eastleigh though. Where's that?

mkultra, this is a sub-forum for the south-east of England. Guys, not need to take the piss, he probably got here on the tracker. There's at least one anarchist in pompey and we had a CPE source in Plymouth (I think, not sure if he gave us anything in the end)

I think the students from Southampton, or Solent, or Portsmouth or anywhere nearby who is interested should try and set an organisation up. Us students are the most philosophically volatile breed there is.

Neither of these are that close to southampton, but there's an active SolFed local in Brighton (of which I'm a member), and in the other direction an occasional discussion group in Exeter.

if you wanted to do a public meeting or something to try and draw sympathizers out of the woodwork I'm sure we'd be able to help. pm me or email contact [@] brightonsolfed.org.uk - or as mentioned above I'm sure the AF would be similarly keen to help.

OK thanks for the info, Brighton seems a bit far from where I am, so I will consider doing a "public" meeting sometime in the future to see if there would be some more people interested.
