Workers' Self-management viability

I am making a website which collects various pieces of evidence of the viability of worker self-management (along with links to related topics) to help people with arguments about the subject. If anyone knows of any articles about worker cooperatives, or how such economies operated in historical circumstances i.e. spain, yugoslavia etc., it would be great if you could post the URL to make this a really good resource.

Hi Comrade,

I would suggest looking for the book "Workers' Control Under Plan and Market: Implications of Yugoslav Self-management " by Ellen Comisso, which has quite a bit of factual information although you may not agree with its conclusions. It's currently going for going for ~ £10 on Amazon marketplace.

if you can get hold of it, i'd suggest Paul Chaulieu's "workers' councils and the economics of a self-managed society". it's all theory and i've not read it, but i've heard very good things about it.

That was another of Castoriadis' pseudonyms. It's quite good, but there are problems with his idea of equal wages.

Bless you. It's a Castoriadis nom de plume. It's on site, we discussed it here...

"An Anarchist FAQ" (www.anarchistfaq.org) has sections on co-operatives and self-management. Have a look at section I, particularly I.3 and I.4, while section J.5 talks about co-operatives within capitalism. It has numerous references to good books on the subject.

Also I would recommend David Schweickart's "Against Capitalism" for a good summary of the work on co-operatives up to around 1994.
