What is your opinion on the Uhuru Movement?

The Uhuru Movement is an organization led by Chairman Omali Yeshitela. Their ideology is "Yeshitelism" or "African Internationalism." They say Yeshitelism will help white people see the world through the eyes of oppressed for the first time, while Marxism is a euro centric, white power ideology.

They say a lot of stuff that is true and also a lot of crazy stuff aimed at different audiences.

It's good to know that the Uhuru Movement is sponsored by the right wing of the republican party in Florida. Twenty years ago Yeshitela made himself useful to local republican party leaders of his base at St. Petersburg Florida. Soon money flowed from government grants and donations from the local bourgeoisie. At that time they began to grow as Soviet and Chinese sponsored parties ran out of money and their followers were drawn to this richly endowed organization.

Their main activity is separating white people from their money by playing on white liberal guilt over centuries of slavery, oppression and brutal discrimination. Unfortunate victims join a cult like organization and devote their lives to raising and giving money to Yeshitela and his family.

Recently former Uhurus have organized and are doing the revolutionary work that Uhuru only talks about. They put out a series of posts explaining what went wrong. Google The African Socialist Movement on Wordpress for a detailed report.

Here's an interesting article on them.

I always run into these guys tabling at my school. Their solidarity committee are a living example of the ideology of white guilt in practice and why it leads nowhere. Someone told me they held a rally to support this one guy who killed a cop, an appealing concept at face value. However this person was confronted by the police because he sexually assaulted someone. Very reactionary stuff.

The most intolerable part of the Uhuru guilt-cult is their violent homophohia. In the Bay Area in the 1990s Uhuru marginalized themselves by their physical attacks on ACT UP.

I don't see absolutely anything other than a typical form of third-worldist nationalism. They use the term "internationalism" inverting its meaning, which is probably something they inherited from Maoism. The claim that Marxism (or anarchism for that matter) is "eurocentric" is usually a good indicator of overall crap politics, I don't remember any group claiming this sort of thing that wasn't completely reactionary.

They could probably be best described as racist-homophopic-Stalinist-thugs.

THIS we believe is not a demonstration of matured and effective leadership on the part of the Uhuru Movement; a group which claims for itself the title of being the most-ideologically advanced segment of the African revolutionary movement

Hello all, we're a copwatch- anti police brutality group in San Diego. The following is our experiences with them and its quite disturbing. We had no choice but to call out their dangerous activity of incriminating protesters in this open statement as proof of what we want to stay away from. I have also attended a mtg on January 18th to talk to members face to face in hopes to unite and discuss safety issues. I stated whatever has happened in the past can be worked out. The two white women -the only two white people in the room, voted that I leave and they have been slandering me ever since.
With the screen shots and communication serving as proof, we made an example out them.
