There do surely have to be some broad principles? Some groups accept so many divergences that they seem to be heading in no direction at all, despite their size..

Such as?

For myself, I feel that unity based on common action can deal with a lot of differences over theory, but a politically-based organisation that isn't defined by action will generally need close agreement.

I think AF, SF and CW are all currently 'politically based organisations etc' as in the last part of your last sentence. as I've already put I think we should merge on a can-do ticket;)

BUT, and here's a wild card. How about Class War and the Wombles merging eek grin red n black star black bloc Mr. T circle A

I'm all for mergers, as I've said. Knightrose raised some interesting points there.

The problem seems to be that although the closest two feds are the AF and SolFed (politically), ClassWar is far more open to the idea of mergers.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how true this is. Certainly there are already dual memberships AF/CW, CW/IWW, CW/Campaign for real Ale, CW/N.U.M., and to be honest, ultimately, I can see nothing wrong with AF principles... It's just a question of timing, as we have already seen in a discussion on 'industrial organising' along these lines...

I think the real issue is perhaps how we conceive the revolutionary process, the way ahead, and even we may have different political ambition within our lifetimes?! or so it appears... These merger discussion leave me feeling less strong than when I discuss the political conditions OUTSIDE of our Feds that are apparent, and it shouldn't be like that. black bloc red n black star
