Puerto Rican Liberation:
The colonial reality of Puerto Rico has created a national liberation struggle that has produced many independence freedom fighters and pro-independence organizations; that have been actively educating, organizing, and mobilizing the Puerto Rican community against US colonialism. The nature of anti-colonial struggles often gives birth to clandestine revolutionary organizations, which engage in armed struggle against the colonial powers. The Puerto Rican political prisoners were apart of two of these clandestine organizations: Las Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional (FALN) and Los Macheteros. Their arrests and subsequent imprisonment correspond to a planned effort by the FBI to destroy their organizations and repress their activities.

"I survive because of the mail I get."
(Billy Cottrell, Earth Liberation remand prisoner)
Welcome to the September 2004 edition of Spirit of Freedom. As ELP goes to
print we await with concern the start of the trial of Billy Cottrell, an
American environmentalist accused of involvement with a series of ELF
arsons. As reported below under the heading "Political Threats" Billy is
being threatened with Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if
he doesn't start cooperating with the authorities. ELP does not believe
anyone should face Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and
especially not someone who has never harmed or injured anyone in his life.
ELP cannot over emphasise how important it is that people around the world
appose this political show trial, which is about to take place in America.
We must support Billy and stop the injustice, which is being served upon
him. Please, no matter where you are in the world, support Billy and all
the other eco-prisoners! Lets not allow Billy to be crushed - No compromise
in defence of Mother Earth!
COURT REPORTS & LEGAL UPDATES
POLITICAL THREATS
In July 2004 it was announced that a series of new charges have been laid
against American eco-activist Billy Cottrell. The new charges all relate to
the alleged use of Molotov Cocktails to burn some SUVs: Or as the FBI put
it, the use of a destructive device during a violent crime (924c). Because
of these new charges the Prosecution is now threatening Billy with "life
imprisonment without the possibility of parole" if convicted on all the
charges unless he starts cooperating with the authorities.
These new charges are a blatant attempt by the authorities to try
and blackmail Billy into cooperating with them. Even if Billy were guilty
(which he is not) the threat of 'Life imprisonment without the possibility
of parole' far exceeds the seriousness of the crimes he is accused of.
ELP urges everyone to do everything they can to support Billy and to help
raise awareness to the political nature of his trial. We must not let the
State crush Billy and bury him with life imprisonment. Please do everything
you can to help.
For more info on Billy please contact Free Billy Defence & Support

POLICE RAIDS IN ITALY
At the end of July 2004, there were a number of raids across Italy as the
police investigated a letter bombing campaign that was claimed by an Italian
anarchist group. However the raids appear to have been just as much about
harassing known activists as any serious attempt to investigate the letter
bombs. As a result of these raids four people have been remanded into
custody.
One of the four is Sergio Maria Stefani, who was under house arrest
for alleged participation in a series of animal rights actions that included
allegedly leaving an incendiary device outside a butchers shop.
Now despite the fact animal rights incendiary devices look nothing
like letter bombs. Nor do they explode or do anything other than produce a
small flame, the Italian police are trying to link Sergio into a conspiracy
to carryout a letter bombing campaign. (This is a common tactic of the
Italian police to take out political opposition).
Supporters of Sergio said "This is a very dangerous case, since
letter bombs and bombs are taken seriously and the police want to find
someone to incriminate [for the bombs], guilty or not."
The other three people arrested in this case are Marco Ferruzzi, Simone del
Moro and David Santini. They are listed as "Other Political Prisoners".
MORE IL SILVESTRE RAIDS
On 30/07/04 three more people linked to the Italian eco-anarchist group "Il
Silvestre" were arrested and 10 houses raided.
Two of the three have been accused of preparing & using firebombs.
The third has been accused of conspiracy. Initially all three were placed
under house arrest, but after a week William Frediani was remanded into
custody. The day after William was remanded his co-defendant, Francesco,
escaped from his house arrest and is now "on the run".
There are now five Il Silvestre defendants under house arrest, one
person on the run and two people, Alessio Perondi & William Frediani, on
remand.
All of these arrests have occurred following a police investigation
into the activities of on an armed group called Revolutionary Offence Cells
(COR). Most COR actions have been against the ruling right-wing party and
include such things as torched cars, damaged house doors, etc.
COR have always stated they are a communist group, but the police have said
they believe COR to be anarchists. Il Silvestre became a target for the
police after they published a COR press release.
In response to the police raids against Il Silvestre, COR has
contacted the Italian newspaper, La Nazione, saying there is no connection
between them and Il Silvestre. For more info contact Il Silvestre, via del
Cuore 1, 56127 Pisa, Italy.
TRAITORS JAILED
In Spirit of Freedom July 04 we reported the excellent news that American
eco-activist Connor Cash was found 'Not Guilty' of any involvement in a
series of ELF arsons.
The reason Connor was on trial was because 3 men, Mashkow III,
McIntyre and Rammelkamp, who had each admitted their roles in the arsons,
had named Connor as instigating and being involved with the fires.
ELP does not support informants and therefore we will not be
supporting these three. But people might like to know that despite their
lies, these three have not escaped jail.
In July '04, George Mashkow III, the original traitor in this case &
the worlds first ever ELF informant, was jailed for 366 days.
A few days later Jared McIntyre was jailed for 3½ years. Just
before his sentencing McIntyre, who was on remand at the time, was attacked
by another prisoner and was beaten so badly he was in a wheelchair for a
week.
ELP does not know what sentence third traitor Matthew Rammelkamp has
been given. If anyone knows, please let us know.
FBI HARRASS AUSTRALIAN TOURIST
In August 04, an Australian radio broadcaster & human rights activist, who
happens to be blind, contacted ELP with details of an experience she had
whilst visiting America.
In June 04 she flew to California, USA, to visit friends. Days
after her arrival, she heard, that a young man's home had been raided by 20
FBI agents who questioned him closely about his activist activities and then
proceeded to make arrangements to have him go before the Grand Jury. It was
alleged that the man was involved in the burning down of an apartment
complex in California.
The journalist tried to contact this man to do media coverage, but
was told that he was so traumatised by the event that he could not appear on
radio.
Having made her request to interview this young man, the journalist
herself became an FBI target.
On 19/07/04, the journalist made preparations to leave California.
Upon arriving at the airport, she had an eerie feeling. She had a sense of
fear and knew something was going to occur. This feeling proved accurate
when she attempted to board her plane and was stopped by a customs officer.
He took her passport and questioned its validity. Then 4 FBI agents
appeared.
The FBI questioned the journalist closely about her activist
activities over in Australia, asking if she was involved with any Anarchist
groups in Australia?
They asked if she was involved with the Earth Liberation Front?
They also asked her about a number of people suspected of being ELF
activists. She didn't know any of the people named.
Her belongings were searched. However all they found was a white cane, a
studded belt, punk music, and a heap of brail books. They said that they
were searching her bags for bombs.
She explained to them that this was harassment, and that it was ridiculous
that they were asking her these questions. However they tried to link her
with the burning down of the apartment complex in California.
Then they said that she should encourage others to come forward and
"tell the truth". She was interrogated for at least 15 minutes, after which
they let her go. However despite letting her go the FBI followed her around
the area and waited around until she left the airport.
The FBI agents informed her that such interviews are part of the
preventative work the agency has focused on, following the September 11
terrorist attacks.
USA-SHAC SEVEN
Earlier this year seven American animal rights activists, linked to the
international campaign 'Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty" (SHAC), where
indicted under the controversial Federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.
The SHAC 7 are alleged to have run a website that reported on &
expressed support for protest activity against Huntingdon Life Sciences
(HLS) and its business affiliates. This included alleged support for ALF
style actions. For their alleged support for direct action the seven are
charged with "terrorism" offences and risk years of imprisonment.
As ELP supporters are aware, the SHAC 7 are the latest in a long
list of activists, around the world, who have been targeted for merely
reporting direct action news. As an international movement we must stand up
for free speech and support those who face police repression for merely
reporting the news.
For more information contact The SHAC 7, c/o NJARA, PO Box 174,
Englishtown, NJ 07726, USA. Or see the website www.shac7.com
BRITISH COURT OF APPEAL NEWS
In July 04 British Animal Rights prisoners, Paul Le Boutillier and Paul
Holliday had their sentences reduced, by the Court of Appeal, after it was
ruled their original sentences were excessive. Both men were convicted of
making thousands of phone calls to animal abusers. Paul Le Boutillier's
calls were of an abusive and threatening nature. Paul Holliday's calls were
mainly silent. Paul Le Boutillier had his sentence reduced to 30 months.
Paul Holliday had his sentence halved to 9 months and he was released
shortly afterwards.

December 04 when he will be Paroled.

ELP has heard about a number of arrests in America, but we have little
information. Does anyone know about the arrests, in June 04, of Reclaim the

Also ELP has heard that in August 04 activists from Orange County
Earth First! were arrested for alleged trespass & $50,000 criminal damage.

MESSAGES FROM PRISONERS
American forest defender Jeremy Rosenbloom has written to ELP to thank
everyone who has sent letters of support to him.
Jeremy said that the letters are "great to receive, although I'm
afraid I can not afford to reply to them at this time due to my limited
budget. [.] I just hope that [the ELP supporters] know that I do appreciate
their letters of support just the same!"
Jeremy also very kindly states "[The ELP] newsletters definitely
help me feel less alone knowing that many others around the world are
struggling to end both environmental and exploitation of life of all kinds!"
As Jeremy demonstrates in his letter, prisoners do appreciate your
letters of support: Even if they are unable to always let you know in
person how much they appreciate the letters. Many prisoners, like Jeremy,
have limited funds and what money they do have goes to buying stamps to
write to family & close friends. Therefore when you write to Jeremy, and
the other prisoners, please consider enclosing a stamped self-addressed
envelope to help with the cost of a reply letter.
