Liverpool Social Forum!

so i won't bore you all with what a social forum is, cos we all know what it is, BUT, some hip 'n' groovy people are trying to get a Liverpool Social Forum going cos we've got quite a lot of cool people in Liverpool but it's all soooooo fragmented so it seems kinda shit from outside and we can hardly ever get anything done

ANYWAY, there's already been a (not very well publicised) pre-meeting meeting of about twenty or so interested people, but there will be a proper meeting on....

Tuesday 18th January, at 7.30pm in the McAusland Lounge, top floor of the Guild of Students, Mount Pleasant

i can't make it, but if some nice anti-authoritarian/horizontal types can come along, we can make sure it isn't too dominated by the trots.

yeahyeahyeah there's also a rough mock-up of a website: www.geocities.com/liverpoolsf/titlepage.html

cool stuff!

i didn't go, but was it good?

i was being fannied around by Virgin Trains and their 'severe weather precautions' (i.e. a smattering of snow that somehw bust up a load if signal boxes. bloody typical roll eyes )

I reckon that's down to the last few meetings being held in a student bar in the university. They've had some stick for that and credit where it's due the next meeting is supposed to be somewhere more accessible.

Any trots there madashell? grin

YO nonames, the McAusland Lounge isn't a bar, but yes it is in the Guild.

that's the bloody thing: people are so scared of associating with students that they constantly insult them and therefore the movement is divided even more.

Also, remember the LSF was an idea generated by students (i admit, including myself). And yes, it's small at the moment, and yes not many people know about it yet etc etc but come on, at least we're trying to do SOMETHING. Also there have only been two meetings so far.

sorry to rant, but it irritates the fuck out of me sometimes, especially when i'm constantly battling the trots and always in the minority.

No one's slagging off students but if you want a Liverpool wide Social Forum you don't hold the meetings in a student lounge in a university. That's just common sense.

confused

please let's try not to get bitchy about this. It was common-sense to us to book a place that's really easy to get hold of, free, easy to find, and close to the city centre.

the next meeting will be somewhere non-studenty, so let's just leave it there and start afresh

No need to apologise mate. There's nothing wrong with having a rant wink

It's good that someone's taken the initiative and started the ball rolling in Liverpool and now we have to build the interest in a Social Forum that welcomes everyone who has something to offer. Waged, unwaged, activists and non-activists.

Um, unless you've managed to persuade them, then it isn't. I spoke to them, and they said we're going to be too big a group for their space to handle.

It's going to (probably) be in the Casa instead now. I'll let you all know later today.

Sorry everyone,

i'm afraid the LSF meeting won't be this week, but next. we're having trouble finding places that'll have us.

I'll post on here and indymedia when i've found somewhere we can go.

Been wandering round trying to find the Yahoo! group that was mentioned in the last forum, but can't find the damn thing. No doubt incompetence on my part (not uncommon). Anyone care to point me towards it?

OKOKOKOK so it's been a few weeks, but...

The LSF is having its next meeting next Tueasday (i.e. 5th April) at 7.30pm downstairs at the Casa, Hope Street.

I think we're going to concentrate on preparations for MayDay mostly, since it's only a few weeks away.

Yeah, so here's what's happening for the mayday weekend so far:

Friday 29th: return of Liverpool Critical Mass

Saturday 30th: Dunno yet

Sunday 1st: Two marches- one from Liverpool, and the usual one on the Wirral. Liverpool march meets up somewhere andthen gets the ferry across to meet the Wirral march in the park. Then a bit of a parTAY with a Forum Tent for discussion of various issues and then more parTAY. Lovely.

Personally wot i reckons...

* Critical mass- WOO YEAH!!! 8)

* For Saturday i think perhaps some sort of film fest in the afternoon then funfunfun maybe another Extravoganzamania in the evening with speakers n stuff.

* For the march- we need to make an LSF banner and sort out publicity. I like designing leaflets and posters, but no longer have access to free photocopying sad

Also it'd be good to maybe set up a temporary cooking collective to make a load of cheap meals for the people. kinda Food Not Bombs styleee. Perhaps ask for donations.

Also does anyone know someone with a sound system? that'd be KEWWL.

a bit of food for yer brains, get the creative juices going, as it were.

Tuesday 7.30: be there kids!
