Big strike at Pirelli in Carlisle coming up

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but there does seem to be a lot going on at the moment:

SEVEN hundred workers at Carlisle’s Pirelli tyre factory are to go on strike in one of the biggest demonstrations of industrial action ever staged in the city.

Three strike days – August 3, 4 and 17 – have been voted for by production staff after Pirelli, one of Carlisle’s biggest employers, announced it was to ‘outsource’ five jobs to workers outside the factory.

It will see the majority of the factory’s 1,000-strong workforce walk out for only the second time since opening in Carlisle in 1969 – the only other strike being in the late 1970s.

The T&G union balloted all of its 700 members at the Dalston Road earlier this month. The votes returned a two thirds majority in favour of strike action.

The T&G have, however, refused to confirm exactly how many ballot papers had been returned.

Now the union has confirmed to Pirelli bosses that members will strike for 40 hours starting at 6am on Friday August 3 until 10pm on Saturday August 4. Then again for 24 hours at 6am on Friday, August 17.
