Anarchist bookfair 2012

... who will be there?

kpk is going to have a presentation about anti-roma demonstrations and their connection with the government reforms:

Quote:
Crisis, Anti-Roma Riots and the Czech Working Class
In 2011, northern Bohemia was swept by a wave of anti-Roma demonstrations and riots. Based on interviews we conducted with the participants, we will investigate the reasons that brought them to the streets, as well as the ambitions they had. We will situate the riots in the context of anti-workers policies of the Czech government and of the inability of workers to counter them. The growing anti-Romaism is itself a result of the weakness of class struggle, further weakening the ability of workers to defend themselves against the bosses and the state.

mc will be speaking about

Quote:
Refuse the blackmail “either work or health”
In July, Italian justice ordered the closure of the big Ilva steel mill in Taranto because of an environment risk of cancer. A united front of bosses, unions and parties rejected the decision in the name of defending the company and work. But a minority of workers created a committee to refuse this blackmail. In doing so, they revived the spirit of Italian struggles from 1968 to 1977, when, against the unions, workers in dangerous workshops at a big chemical facility in Porto Marghera forced the bosses to pay them for doing nothing.

I'm thinking of going. It'll be my first one and I'll probably be going alone, so it'd be good to meet up with some other posters.

I just looked at the meetings programme. The things that stood out to me immediately were that Martin Wright is doing a meeting without Ian Bone (is Ian ill or something), and the AF are doing a meeting on privilege theory.

There's a ridiculous amount of SF stuff this year; discussion/skill-share of direct action solidarity tactics (Room 318, 11-12), new pamphlet launch (Room 323, 4-5), a session on workplace sexism (Room 326, 2-3), an organiser training taster session (Room 321, 5-6), plus speakers at the boycott workfare meeting (Room 326, 2-3) and 'what is class struggle?' meeting (Room 320, 3-4), as well as the Sparrow's Nest meeting covering SF prehistory - including SWF and DAM materials (Room 322, 2-3), and a social afterwards upstairs at the New Globe, 359 Mile End Road. When I'm not rota'd on the stall/shaking buckets, I'll probably be mostly in the pub.

Fixed. cool

This'll be my second ever bookfair and I'm really looking forward to it. grin

I think of the SF stuff, I'm really keen to attend the Sparrow's Nest exhibit, the Fighting for Ourselves Launch and the Workplace Trainer session.

Also, I do hope the SF stall will have a stack of the 'Standing Outside Shops' poster. Because it's ace.

Inb4 "The Sparrow's Nest was founded by the AF, in what sense is this 'SF stuff'?," etc.

I'll be going - should be interesting, my first visit to planet anarcho for about 18 months. Will there be a libcom social in the evening again this year?

I never actually went to any of the Roma meetings in CR when I was living there so I should check it out. Better late than never.

You know, this is how flights get missed and comrade credit card gets a phone call. No repeat performances please as I'd like to see you all!

SF archives are amazing. Props to the comrade from manchester who collected stuff for years... way back since the time of the Syndicalist Workers Federation.

Wow, those presentations sound incredibly better than the kind of stuff we have at (vaguely defined) radical book fairs here in the US. I just went to one today, actually, and the schedule composed of a former member of the Weather Underground, someone who talked about "videogame zinesters," and Amy Goodman... I think capitalism may have been brought up once out of the panels I sat through, and that was only when someone asked a question to a panelist directly about it.

I plan on going, hopefully with a couple people from croydon SF as well. I would definitely be interested in meeting some of you, and a social at the pub after sounds good to me also.

I see there is a thread on this now. I think it is no accident that privilege theory evolved in academia in a country with one of the weakest working classes in the Western world.

Since animosity with other groups is pretty minimal, can libcom drinks not be at the Freedom gathering in the evening?

The need to split into little groups doesn't seem all that appropriate this year.
