'Car' bombing - anarchists do it first

According to Mike Davis's new book (a history of car bombs) the first car bombing was the act of an anarchist in Wall Street, 1920 in support of Sacco & Vanzetti. And he never got caught.

it was probably the state, doesn't seem likely an anarchist would be THAT stupid. If they wanted to have a go at the ruling class I'm sure they could've thought of something a bit better than that. The fact that the only victims were working class (and the fact that that would obviously have been what happened if you blow up a wagon in the middle of a street) would seem to point to the state trying to frame-up anarchists and turn the public against us. Note:

Quote:
Before the last of the victims were buried, the newspapers declared that the investigators had run out of leads in their search for the perpetrator. In fact, Flynn and the NYPD had a very good idea of who was behind the explosion – what they lacked was the proof.

The story behind the Wall Street bombings encompasses the period known as the ''Red Scare'' and led to one of the most famous trials in American history.

Seems fishy they'd run out of leads, what w/ anarchists all over the place. Probably didn't want to look too close.

Now this is just all wild speculation about what happened but I'd hate to think of anarchists going stupid shit like that... tongue

Propaganda by deed anarchists did a lot of stupid shit.

Anarchists were also the first to use a getaway car following a robbery. The illegalist Bonnot gang did it. Before that people would rob banks and try to run away with the cash.

If the person wasn't caught how do they know it was an anarchist?

The warning, stamped on ordinary paper with a rubber printing kit, was found in a mailbox a block away from the explosion. The mailbox was emptied around 11:30 each day, so detectives reasoned that the terrorists had dropped their message into the mailbox on their way to detonating their bomb

From the image source website. Thats a shit website tho, im sure its covered elsewhere better if someone bothered ot look

See, we aren't all stupid are we? There'd be no great action movies with car chases along windy French and Italian mountain roads if it weren't for anarchists. No Italian Job origional or modern...

If nothing else, we deserve a bit of cred for that!

For those of you in London, Mike Davis is speaking today (friday) at BirkBeck. Zizek is speaking on Monday BTW.

Friday 23 February

Mike Davis will give a talk and launch his new book Buda's Wagon: A Brief History of the Car Bomb

Room B01 Clore Management Centre at 4.30pm.

Celebrated urban historian Mike Davis' new book is a history of one of the deadliest of terrorist weapons. This account of the poor man's airforce from Vietnam to Beirut, traces the role of state intelligence agencies - particularly those of the USA, Israel, India and Pakistan - in globalising urban terrorist techniques.

Also the above attack (pictured), I think was part of an insurrectionist tendency co-ordinated by Guiseppe Galleani(?), who to my knowledge advocated these sorts of bombing campaigns back in the day.

It wasn't a very good talk sad

Yes it was Galleani - actually davis talked about Avrich and how he discovered who this Buda guy was in Italy.

Hello Ned! Do you mean what I have quoted? It sounds like you do... is this guy juist guilty by association?

Hi Lem, I just meant that I'd rather that there was no anarchist association at all with car bombing.
