college NUS elections

In a couple weeks my college will be holding elections for the NUS president. I'm against the leadership and structure of the NUS, but they do have considerable power and resources. My dilemma is that without any sort of opposition the NUS will likely to consist of mainly apolitical or even right wing students. We currently have a small group in our college who are campaigning against the cuts and privatisation in education, but we could do with the money and resources the NUS has. Currently we have to fund our campaigning out of our own pockets which limits what we can do as a group. As a libertarian should I try and get involved in the NUS elections to prevent it being controlled by apolitical and right wing students?
