hey guys, as I've been adding the Treason pamphlets I've noticed that there's a fair bit of redundancy in the tags. For instance "unions", "trade unions" and "Trade Unions" are all separate tags. Do you ever go through the tags and merge them?

cheers
Pete

We've got tags we're trying to use consistently - occasionally others slip through and then we go through eventually and delete them. Merging is hassle - easier to change the articles themselves.

Easy way to check the most popular one if you're not sure is to open another browser window and put libcom.org/tags/tag-name

i.e.
http://libcom.org/tags/unions
http://libcom.org/tags/trade-unions
http://libcom.org/tags/Trade-Unions

Everything that goes in goes via a moderation queue, and I know John's been keeping a close eye on how things are tagged so it'll get tidied up generally.

Thanks for that Catch. I've tried to use all of the variations where they exist.

Also do you reckon Treason could go in the list of groups and organisations on the main library page?

cheers
Pete

hi peter, we're going to be killing + redoing that index soon, so all groups/people will be listed.

As for tags, we try to keep on top of it but with user submissions people who don't understand the tagging system keep entering new redundant tags faster than I can delete them.

the only tag we want with unions is: unions

problem is only a few of us know almost all the tags in use, to know the best ones I can just recommend looking about a bit, or checking this index of the main ones:
http://libcom.org/tags

At some point i'm going to spend a day or two deleting redundant tags and putting a big note somewhere telling people to only match new submissions to existing ones... but i think that'll have to wait till november.

he's an author, and he is a tag now because you created it, though it won't be on the list (which is top 500 or something)

Revol - they're parallel systems, not designed to replace each other.

A search can pull up all kinds of crap (like this thread) about Zizek, with tags you get a filtered list: http://libcom.org/library/zizek-slavoj

And if you wanted, you could use an rss reader to subscribe to any new updates to zizek in the library by adding libcom.org/library/zizek-slavoj/feed

The tags list is top 2-300, can't remember what. We'll have a full list of every tag on the site soon in alphabetical order, and a complete authors list in the library soon, but that ain't done yet.

Paul Roussenq - The jailbird of Saint Gilles
Anatoli Zhelezniakov
Kurt Wilckens

I know, I just really really hate tags, they are one of those things that seem like a really good idea but just don't work that well in practice ie they seem an awful lot of hardwork.

Nah, it's way easier than making manual indexes for thousands of articles, and it'll get easier as it goes on instead of harder.

We've been trying to categorise around 3,000 different items over the past three months, and we'll get to these when we have a chance. I understand the decision on attribution was taken a good while after these were originally put on the site, and we didn't get any messages about them when they were originally added.

While you're here, could I direct your attention to this thread: http://libcom.org/forums/anarchist-federation/haile-selassie

i fucking despise tags.

Just cos you can't work them you muppet!

Entering zizek as author then again with just his surname!

The tags are the best thing about v4.

Just from a quick look, our tag indexes come in top page of google searches for:
clothing industry, wildcat strikes, spanish resistance, IWMA...

little brother - we will get to that as soon as possible.

OK fair enough, catch/John. - please make the changes when you have the time - the list is there to help.

Selaisse - The contents of this thread have been circulated to members. How do you see the replies? [This should be tagged as Anarchist Federation as it came from Organise! 48:

If it's ok to repost replies on that thread that'd be great. Or you can e-mail to admin (at) libcom.org

Happy to send the original e-mails we got about it to you or anyone else.

Personally I am not fussed.

But who are the replies to? If to libcom I'd say that was your choice.

Otherwise post them to organise [ at ] afed [ dot ] org [ dot ] uk

and editors can decide, I suppose.
