search box

I just tried putting the search box in the header instead of the columns. To make it fit, I got rid of the submit button etc. and stuck a "search: libcom.org" text in the box instead - now you just enter the text and hit enter.

Does this work for everyone? I've never tried to do that before and it might well be dodgy wink

And is it better or worse?

me neither. I didn't get that far yet...

We need to sort the menu css out at the same time, so I'm leaving it for rkn to sort with a bit of luck!

I cant seem to do a search.

For example, I wanted to search for an old "parecon" thread, searched for it, found the thread, clicked on it, but returned to a front page.

Try for yourself... is this taking you to the thread or to a front page?

i think that means the search engine has cached the old link, and i think all you can do is wait for the cache to update neutral

you could try searching other search engines (yahoo etc) for:

site:http://libcom.org/forums parecon

Yep, that's a link to the old forums, unfortunately it seems to be taking ages for those links to update.

could it be cos you did those bot blocking things?

No the bot blocking didn't work, and can apparently fuck the site in other ways so I killed it. We've got a robots.txt but that's not doing anything naughty I don't think. It's just that google doesn't update completely broken links for a while just in case they come back - and some of them will still be linked elsewhere on the 'net.

I've managed to redirect all old forum urls to the forum index now, so that'll tell the bots that it's permanently moved. A lot of links to old forum posts will be on other sites and blogs as well, which means they won't go for a very long time.
