*** Notice to all teachers ***

We really don't care about what you're teaching us. Everything interesting has been systematically stripped out of the course, and we're just doing this to get a degree so we can have a marginally less shit job.

well yeah if you insist on doing a stupid pointless course rather than something useful like maths, science or a language... all my courses are very interesting, and if i wasn't ill i would have gone in today.

What people forget is that for every hour in the classroom there is at least two hours preparation time and then the time for marking assignments, both not paid for. (My partner’s a lecturer so I know this).

Not in my department there isn't, they just recycle last years powerpoints and pinch all their graphics and diagrams from textbooks. Except the lecturers who set their own book as the course text, then sit and teach fuck all so all 60 people have to buy it.

Most people end up working in two or three institutions so you can make it up to 10, even 15 paid hours a week if you're lucky. Which works out at between 7 and 10 grand a year (you can only work 24 weeks out of 52. I top it up with temping in the summer, which decreases your chances of a full time job which depend on your research profile which takes time that no one's paying you for). It's weird, because if you're at the top end of that you can end up doing a year's worth of work in half a year, or doing shitloads of work that you don't get paid for in the holidays, especially if you end up convening courses, which ups the admin load with no extra money, usually.

Still, part-timers in HE don't have it anywhere near as shit as part-timers in FE, who were all contracted out to a specially set up temp agency (Protocol) a few years to get round new European laws which would have meant paying them sick pay every now and again.

yeah i was thinking about teaching in FE and then realised its wall to wall temporary contracts. even in HE the ivory tower doesn't exist so much these days. from talking to people teaching in HE it seems really hard to fit in the research you have to do and get published with the teaching needs of your students as well.

It's almost impossible, which is why there's so many part-timers. We're covering all the teaching remission that lets the full-timers research so that the department gets more money from the RAE while the students get fucked over even though they're paying most of our fucking wages. The lack of punctuation indicates quite how pissed off I am about it.

NATFHE seem to be starting to take it seriously, though, so perhaps there'll be some kind of bandwagon to jump on to try and change it. Not holding my breath though. In two institutions I work in there've been pay and conditions disputes involving part-timers and we've been shafted every time.

£33 an hour for leading (sorry, "facilitating" roll eyes ) the seminar, and £28 an hour for going to the lecture that precedes the seminar.

Yes, that's right, children -- they get paid £28 an hour for going to the same lecture as you do. tongue

There is a definite hierarchy in HE lecturing with part timers, often women on the bottom doing the teaching, planning marking to enable others to do the prestigious research that brings money in which is what HE is all about these days, money in the bank and bums on seats.
