Homeless man arrested for stealing one teabag

A HOMELESS man is facing trial and a possible jail sentence for stealing a teabag worth less than a penny.

Paul Thatcher sneaked into a primary school and made himself a cuppa before bedding down for the night on an autumn evening last year. The greying 28-year-old yesterday found himself in the dock before three magistrates, his defence solicitor and a prosecution lawyer to answer the charge of stealing a "beverage of value unknown".

Thatcher's lawyer, Ms Gudrun Young pleaded with the Crown Prosecution Service to drop the case, saying: "We must consider whether it is in the public interest to proceed. I would ask the Crown to review it."

"The charge is that he made himself a cup of tea. He didn't even take the teabag away. He just used it."

During a 15-minute hearing, the court at Slough, Berks, was told Thatcher had fully admitted trespassing at Trinity Primary School, Henley-on-Thames.

But he did not enter a plea on the teabag charge.

Prosecutor Ola Jesu-Wemimo didn't comment and the magistrates agreed to defer the case to allow the matter to be considered.

Thatcher blew a kiss to his girlfriend in the public gallery before he was remanded in police custody. He is due in court again on March 11.

- TOP jewellers Boodles have created a teabag worth £7,500 for the 75th anniversary of PG Tips. There are 100 diamonds glued to the outside, 100 inside and 80 on a white gold chain which replaces the string.

i think you'll find he's being charged for trespassing in a primary school which is supposed to be a secure area for obvious reasons, while i clearly don't agree with the punishment or the legal procedures and find the social factors behind this important its somewhat naive to think its about the teabag....

Without further information though it looks like they're trying to add theft to a trespass charge, and I'd guess that theft carries significantly higher penalties. It'll probably be thrown out as a vindictive charge anyway. I'm more worried about house-arrest at the moment.

No I dont think he'd get much for the theft of that!! Its just that if they discover another criminal act they charge that as well. Altho Im surprised they were so picky. Its like when I got charged with shoplifting and I had 1 spliff on me at the time and they added posession. sad

Which raises an interesting point: what would happen if a homeless person was given a house arrest punishment? In theorey, they would have to be housed first. This could be an excellent way out for the homeless - become terrorists! In a way, the government would be actually rewarding the poorest people in our society for fighting them!!??
