------

Aderonke Apata, a Nigerian lesbian and LGBT activist, is currently facing the possibility of deportation to Nigeria. Aderonke previously fled Nigeria due to religious persecution and several of her family members have been murdered in 'retribution' for her sexuality.

In 2014, the Nigerian President - Goodluck Jonathan -signed into law a bill that makes homosexuality an offence punishable by incarceration for a maximum of 14 years. That legislation, federal in nature, combined with Shar'ia being integrated into the statutes of certain states in north Nigeria makes it one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a lesbian woman.

In March 2011, the UK was a signatory - along with 85 other countries - to a joint statement concerning LGBT rights in Nigeria and and elsewhere. This statement demanded an end to the torture of LGBT people, the protection of their safety and human rights, and the decriminalisation of homosexuality. (For more see here: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2011/03/158847.htm )

If sent back to Nigeria, Aderonke faces persecution, torture, and possibly death.
