Libcom's pick of the best music of 2008.
Empire of the Sun - walking on a dream (Van She Tech remix)
Aussie collaborative effort Empire of the Sun gets the rework treatment from compatriots Van She. The outcome is sublime:

MGMT - Kids
From their outstanding debut album, Oracular Spectacular.
Cut Copy - Lights & music
From their second album, quite possibly the album of the year, In ghost colours, best track is a toss up between this and other standout track Hearts on fire

Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen
Unconventional but beautiful electronic music from Toronto:
Little Boots - Stuck on repeat
Probably the most blogged new artist of 2008, Blackpool's Little Boots (pictured above) is sure to be huge in 2009.

Wiley - Wearing my Rolex
One of the biggest party "choons" of 2008:
Mystery Jets - Young love
It was hard picking just one track from Mystery Jets 2008 album, 21, for this top 10. Flakes being available in 2007 makes it a bit easier:
Kid Cudi vs Crookers - Day 'n' night
U.S.-based rapper signed to Fools Gold gets the Italian treatment from fidget produces Crookers:
British Sea Power - no Lucifer
MIA's Paper planes would have definitely made it in if it hadn't been on Kala, released in 2007. There's loads of other stuff we would have liked included, but just didn't have room. More 2008 lists to come...

In no particular order, here is some pop songs I liked:
Estelle & Kanye - american boy
Duffy - stepping stone
Kaiser Chiefs - never miss a beat
Justice - dvno
Sam Sparro - 21st century life
Morrissey - i'm throwing my arms around paris
Jesus what a fuckin shit year. I actually don't own any of these (except Morrissey which hasn't been released) cos why even bother when I can just stream shit anytime.
I haven't bought pretty much any new music this year, and most of the hc and metal I listen to is 80s and 90s
oh and Alphabeat - fascination
God what a load of hipster trash contemporary music is. I can't think of a single record I've liked this year (apart from maybe a couple of dubstep releases but I haven't checked the dates to be honest), although to be fair I did spend 3/4 of it a long long long way from such empty fashionable shite. The other day I downloaded Scarlett Johansson's Tom Waits covers record and it almost made me abandon music. Way to strip Waits of all his personality, individuality and soul in exchange for that nauseating mechanised monotone 80s pop revivalist amorphous mass of sameness. Even her voice sounds like she's too scared to express herself and has to pose instead. Seriously, how can people listen to that shite without being zombies? What a sorry indictment of (post)modernity she is.
EDIT: Well my housemate's big into Santogold and her Bad Brains cover's kinda jokes I guess...
be fair, the new rise against album is fucking good
Hahaha wankers that listen to Tom Waits
Alan you do realise listening to shit like Tom waits is hipster as fuck anyway?
Maybe I dunno...
Last time I picked up Vice the hipsters were listening to Born Against, Cro Mags and Rorschach which kinda shocked me though.
Well I can't imagine it's that hot in Dublin anyway...brapping with an Oirish accent just sounds like you have cerebral palsy. I think it's perfect for dark basements and MDMA...
Weeler and Alan should hang out
They would be bros
yes you do. remember you had that 'project' where you were trying to get that chubby mate of your into doing weights?
I am pleased libcom likes MGMT
Yeah no room for anyone else when your ego's in the room eh...
I would add "Ladyhawke - Dusk Til Dawn" and "Glasvegas - Daddy's Gone" and "Your Demise - The Blood Stays On The Blade" to the list.
That's quite a ridiculous statement.
How could you have downloaded that, not realising it wouldn't be a tremendous pile of shit?
Also, Ladyhawke mostly sucks. The only good stuff is the Pnau track she did vocals on:
Embrace (featuring Ladyhawke) - PNAU
And the van she tech remix of Paris is burning

I think another of the best tracks of the year is Boys Noize - oh (A-Trak remix)

Thanks for setting me straight, Steven.
I'd just like to say I had nothing to do with this list
you're welcome, any time.
you were complicit by your silence. Furthermore, unfortunately for you you are bound by Libcom's "collective responsibility" clause.
I just tried listening to that PNAU thing, what a load of wanky crap.
A mate would recommend it everytime i talked about Waits. I've now stopped talking to him (not for that reason...well not just that reason anyway
).
not so much wanky.. still crap tho
I like that glasvegas track too. gorgeous accent.
I like that PNAU song. Cheers Steven.
I knew you'd love it, you fruit.
I don't think I've ever seen you stick a night out in the Twisted Pepper with out running out for 3 Euro pints at the shit hole indie disco next door. Which is fair enough, whatever you are into but it hardly gives you time to get into something. And your not the only one hoping dubstep will curl up and die, it's getting a little circular in Dublin, a defacto sound scape for nights out that's all too tiring at this stage.
Anyway, still it's done some good things so here's some other ones..
Skream's remix of the Klaxon's cover of Oakenfold. From late last year, but hearing Benga play it at festival last May was one of the highlights of my year gigging.

For some reason both A Millie and Lollipop by Lil Wayne popped up pretty heavy anywhere I went this year too. Though well sick of em now.

And this was the definite summer anthem for running around campsites manic during the festival season.

To think Tippa Irie is the man that did Complan Neighbour. Was he in a vocal chord accident during the late 80's or something?
Look here guvnor....

Of course not, I'd heard of some of the songs
oh for fucks sake
fake sxe hardcore for wankers
St Albans is pretty fake, to be fair. They're shit live but I do like that song.
that guy from Glasvegas is such a cock though - did you see him on Buzzcocks?
antrophe, I put Lil' Wayne's a milli in there but Ed vetoed it. I think because he's racist.
yeah we're down with the kids!
Also we have our pick of the years music videos here:

Little Jackie - The world should revolve around me.
One of the only new songs I've heard this year but I liked it
Shit. I've hardly listened to any new music this year. I must be getting old. All the stuff I thought was new was actually from 2007.
Is this really a libcom's favourite music of 2008, or just a Steven. and gav's favourite music of 2008? There seems to be a common theme.
I think that's slightly older than 2008! But good though.
This is my favourite music video from 2008, although the music predates 2008 by a long way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1uZj7OujvU
